Dear DayZ: Stalked by murderers

Dear Murderous Bastards,

You are bastards, I hate you. Having finally managed to escape the well-trodden coast of Chernarus me and Neil headed inland. It had taken not an insignificant amount of time to avoid the rampant zombies and stave off the threats of hunger and dehydration. We had learnt a lot and made many mistakes but we had finally begun to make some progress.

At one point we stupidly thought this was 'tooled up'.

We were still very new to this place but had found a factory and discovered fire axes, the first effective weapon we had come across. Then as Neil had turned a corner there it was, a shotgun. It was glorious. We had a gun, we were invincible we could survive anything, we believed. That confidence was short lived. When testing my new axe, swinging it enthusiastically around my head, I accidentally buried it in Neil’s temple. He crumpled to the ground. Why am I telling you two murdering bastards all this? Because I want you to know the pain you caused.

Eventually Neil, now recovered *ish* from his injuries, joined me again and we headed further inland. Maybe we could find a M4 if we headed to the airfield, we thought, somewhat naively. We travelled west for two hours and hoped to reach Novy Sobor. However it turns out Neil has no sense of direction. Even with a compass he could still, somehow, get utterly lost. Having started out from Berezino and walked what we thought was west for an hour, we eventually ended up back in Berezino. To this day I still have no idea how he had managed to get turned around so completely as to end up where we started.

A quick search of Berezino reaped rewards though, lots of food and clothes. And we both decided to head to Elektro as it is hard to get lost on the coast.

We hid from every survivor we saw, suddenly terrified that our shotgun was not good enough. Progress was slow and it took many hours to reach Elektro. We had now been in Chernarus for twelve hours and had little more than a shotgun and an axe to show for it. We had never fired that gun and had hidden from everyone we saw. We were good people. We harmed no-one, we just wanted to survive, but you took that from us.

In Elektro we were lucky enough to find two SKS Rifles and lots of ammo. We quickly made a run from the town when we saw two heavily armed survivors stalking the streets. Unsure as to what to do next, we decided to once again head for the north-west airfield, only this time I would navigate.

We arrived in Novy Sobor, spirits high. This was our mistake, for Neil would never leave. Over confident we began searching the houses quickly and without care of the attention we drew to ourselves. I do not know how far you had followed us, or whether you simply stumbled upon us in Novy Sobor, but you are clearly cowards. Unwilling to face us directly, you followed Neil into a two story building. As he bent down to search under the bed of an upstairs room you quietly climbed to the first floor and crept through the doorway. He turned in time to see you both lunge forward machetes raised. He had just enough life left, with his last breath, to shout ‘Run! I’m being attacked! Fucking run.’

Neil died in that building. Your bloodied hands ripped the SKS from his corpse. He had not fired that rifle, he had not harmed anyone. You murdered him. You are bastards! This apocalypse has drained the humanity from you. I ran for an hour, until there was no chance you would find me as well.

Many thanks,

Nutritious
