The Self Sufficient Sim: New goals old problems

Right so day thirteen started off as a bit of a disaster. I probably deserve it though. So with Toilet unblocked, shower fixed and cooker smouldering in the corner I set Joe to completing his daily slog in the garden. While he is gardening I set myself some goals. The first is to replace the cooker with a much better, top of the range model. The second is to replace the shower with a much better top of the range model. I'm sick of Joe starting fires (despite appearances he is not a bad cook) and having cold showers, which ruin Joe's mood. My third goal is to buy some windows as Joe's house doesn't have any... because I forgot.

Simpler times....

Now, for various reasons Joe is broke. He spent the last his money on some fishing books. Over the last thirteen days Joe has got by pretty easily, and sometimes fortuitously, it is mainly because he has never really needed anything very expensive. A new cooker, shower and windows are a significant investment, one which I'm not really sure how to finance.

At this point Joe's phone rings and when he answers it I'm pleased to see that it is restaurant offering Joe another opportunity. These 'opportunities' have been a great source of revenue for Joe so I get quite excited when I realise that this particular opportunity will be easy to achieve. All they want is twenty excellent quality vegetables. Well I sold the last of my surplus veg the previous day to purchase the above mentioned fishing books but my garden is so productive that by this time tomorrow Joe will have pockets stuffed full of produce. It is then that I notice the reward they are offering for delivering the produce. 'None'. Now, I'm not great with finance, or business either, but getting someone to plant, grow and harvest produce which you don't play for... sounds like slavery to me. Shame on you EA! I accept the job anyway figuring Joe will probably get something out of it at some point. With the morning done, I decide Joe's best shot at making money is catching bigger, rare fish and selling them at the store.

When viewing this picture please have Celine Dion's version
of 'All by myself' playing in the background.

This time though, instead of heading to the pond, I send Joe to the coast to put the baits he learnt from his books to the test. He fishes peacefully for the rest of the day... dreaming of Tamara. No matter how many times I dismiss his wish to kiss, hug, invite Tamara over, they just keep coming back. Her simpering, smiling face tortures my conscious. Joe is oblivious of my decision and must be quietly contemplating their next meeting (am I getting too involved?) not knowing I have banned such an event from ever taking place! His ignorance makes me feel worse somehow. Here I am, the omnipotent presence there to guide him to success and happiness and I'm the one yanking away his desires without him even knowing. All for nothing more than the selfish need to achieve an arbitrary goal I set myself to stave off boredom. It's a good thing he isn't real!

Joe... why do you do this to me?

I remind myself of this fact and soon feel better. Remembering that I based my decision on cold hard calculus also stiffens my resolve. Then Joe gets another call on his mobile. 'Tamara Donner would like to chat. Does Joe Greensleaves want to talk?'

This just isn't fair...

... *sigh*.
