Memoirs of a Gamer: My name is Nutritious and I am a saver.

I have a confession and I think many people will share my weakness. Saving. I save and then reload if anything doesn't go my way. I want to pickpocket that guard, save. I want to declare war, save. I want to fight a battle, save. Oh no my favourite character has turned to gibs and now can't be raised from the dead, load.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to do this. I know many others out there will be doing the same thing and you know what... we are all pathetic. We are weak, we should be ashamed of ourselves. It is not how games are meant to be played. How is there any fun to be had if you take all of the risk out of the game? So in an effort to break my weakness I am playing through Skyrim with a new character and not saving before every single little risky thing I do. I will only save to quit. If I die I can reload, but other than that I have to live with the consequences of my actions. I am excited... I will let you know how I got on...

Well... this is fun...

Not well... It started ok, I headed straight for Riften right from the off, ignoring the instructions to go to Riverun. When I arrived I spoke to the stable master whose name I chose not to learn, because my character is just a bitch like that. After chatting for a while I walked behind him and crouched slightly lower to the ground, sneaky. Not finding this behavior weird, he wondered off. My first attempt at pickpocketing didn't go as planned. I tried to steal the stablemaster's money, but failed. He pulled out a knife. I ran.

A guard quickly tracked me down and forced me to pay a fine or go to Jail, so I paid. When I returned to the Stable master a few hours later he told me 'You've been a good friend to me.' Either he was taking the piss or his other friends must have been real bastards.

It got worse from there. Undeterred by my previous misfortune I headed into Riften and pick pocketed everyone I met. I got away with it quite a bit too, taking many different shiny things. However it wasn't long until my inept thief slipped her hand into someones pocket and instead of pulling out a purse of gold accidentally tugged on their manhood.

This time however I wasn't paying the fine as I didn't want to lose all my stolen booty. I was going to run... far far away. I ran from the pursuing guards out of the gates of the city and over the rugged terrain. I sprinted from time to time but my poor stamina meant I was blowing hard after very little distance. Sometimes I would try to sneak away but apparently slightly crouching in broad daylight doesn't make you invisible. So I continued to run, and run, and run.

Then I heard a roar. From nowhere pounced a Sabrecat clawing at my face. Shocked and surprised it took a moment to take in the gravity of the situation. I was buggered. There was no way I was going to beat that thing. So I ran some more. Only I ran right into a small mining community. The Sabrecat followed. Sensing easier prey in the form of innocent miners he abandoned chasing me and proceeded to attack every single resident in the sleepy little hamlet. I stood aghast, horrified at what I had done. I had lead a dangerous wild animal into a village and watched as the innocent people tried desperately to fight it off with pickaxes and, in some cases, their bare hands. Yesterday they were busy mining to scrape together a meagre living, today they were fighting for their lives, Skyrim is a hard land.

But just as I despaired at the growing pile of corpses, the pursuing guards arrived and they leapt straight into the fray. I raised a cheer as they dispatched the Sabrecat. The villagers, unconcerned with the slaughter of their friends and loved ones, went straight back to mining. Apparently the people of Skyrim are bloody tough too. Then the guards turned towards me, I realised too late what was about to happen, I was still recovering from the drama that had played out before me. I was arrested amidst the corpses of that village, I'm sure that looked bad.

All this because I didn't save... maybe I might do that more often, I thought. Then the game crashed... shit!
